Founded in 1933, SMI is an association of manufacturers of precision mechanical springs and their associate suppliers. The members of SMI work together to address key issues of the industry worldwide, including quality, materials, technology and government regulations

SMI promotes and protects the interests of spring makers across the United States and Canada as well as serves as a clearinghouse and source of information on the many facets of business relating to the industry. Below are some of the SMI publications available through Century Spring. Click on any title to order:

1. Handbook of Spring Design
(116 pages, softcover)
This newly updated Handbook of Spring Design covers the essentials of extension, compression and torsion spring design, plus segments on tolerances and materials, accurately complimenting spring design software. A condensed version of the Encyclopedia of Spring Design, the Handbook is the ideal reference to keep in a briefcase or at a workstation.

2. Fundamentals of Spring Design
(112 pages, softcover)
This practical guide was created for design engineers or those responsible for designing springs in a non-automated environment. A sufficient amount of detail is included for its reader to generate optimum solutions to spring design problems.

3. Compression, Extension, Garter & Torsion Springs
(56 pages, softcover)
This publication describes the basic design concepts for compression, extension, garter and torsion Springs—the most common varieties with the most universal automotive, industrial, business and electronic applications.

4. Other Types of Springs
(174 pages, softcover)
This guide illustrates the design philosophy behind many specialized springs, including belleville washers, spring washers, power and constant-force springs, retaining rings and spiral springs.

5. Tolerancing and Testing
(48 pages, softcover)
This valuable publication provides an understanding and standardization in the way springs are made and tested, necessary to Global markets.

6. Mechanical Springs
by A.M. Wahl
(317 pages, hardcover, 2nd edition)
In addition to practical design, this hardback comprehensively addresses theories motivating the design of several forms of mechanical springs, including coned-disk, torsion, flat, ring, torsion-bar and rubber springs, with special attention to commonly used helical compression and extension springs.

7. Encyclopedia of Spring Design
This valuable reference binder is comprised of Fundamentals of Spring Design, Compression, Extension, Torsion and Garter Springs, Other Types of Springs and Testing and Tolerancing. Created by the SMI Technical Committee, the Encyclopedia of Spring Design contains the technical knowledge to help build a design, choose the correct material and test the final product.
