Spotlight on Performance: Our Aerospace & Defense Spring Applications

Springs are employed in dozens of aerospace and defense applications, including safety-critical flight control systems. As such, all components in these assemblies must operate reliably to ensure the safety of all occupants for every last mission.

For example, stainless steel springs are within an aircraft’s control surface actuator assemblies. The control surface is the movable parts of the aircraft’s wings and tail that allow the pilot to maneuver the plane.

The most recognizable applications of aerospace-grade springs are those employed within aircraft landing gear and braking systems. Aircraft landing gear assemblies typically employ compression springs as direct force and shock-absorbing components. In contrast, extension springs actuate additional landing gear components, such as the downlock mechanisms on strut assemblies, which are essential to the functioning of the landing gear mechanism.

Lastly, springs facilitate the movement of critical motion control systems of military satellite and antenna array systems, enabling the reliable communication of critical military assets.

What We Offer

Reliable Manufacturing Services

Century Spring brings extensive design for manufacturability (DFM) expertise to your project. We also have dedicated, high-speed machines that can quickly scale high-quality spring production processes to large part volumes typically required for aerospace and defense projects.

We also have cutting-edge computational equipment simulation and testing techniques, such as CNC compression self-monitoring and coiling machinery. These capabilities enable us to deliver durable, reliable products across many custom sizes and styles. Our manufacturing services also include complete prototyping and tooling assistance.

We offer aerospace and defense springs that qualify for complete Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) submission level classifications 1-5. The PPAP is a standardized procurement classification commonly used in aerospace and defense industries. It allows suppliers to show that they can consistently manufacture parts that comply with all customer design and quality specifications.

Our team will work directly with you to create, refine, and optimize spring designs to fit specific tolerance, performance, and use case conditions. We are ready to partner with you to solve your most pressing aerospace and defense steel spring design challenges.

Quality Materials

Alloy spring steels are commonly specified spring materials for aerospace and defense components because they possess excellent fatigue resistance against cyclic loading. For example, alloy steel springs are found in safety-critical systems, such as ailerons and wing flaps, which are aerodynamic control surfaces that provide inflight stability and speed control.

Century Spring stocks many aerospace and defense-grade materials, including stainless steel alloys like SST 17-7, nickel-based alloys like Inconel, and even superalloys like Elgiloy, to support the rapid production of custom spring solutions.

Such production planning allows us to deliver custom aerospace springs and components within two weeks of receiving the purchase order.

FAQs About Aerospace Springs

What types of springs are most common in aerospace and defense applications?

Aerospace applications utilize all three of the most common spring types. Compression springs are used in landing gear shock absorbing and suspension systems. Torsion springs can be found in airframe control surface actuators, and extension springs are integrated into door mechanisms where a tension force is needed to open or close cargo bay doors.

Do I need a custom design?

Standard springs are readily available in various sizes and specifications. However, if you determine that you need a custom-designed spring that we do not carry in stock, call us today at 800-237-5225 or fill out our Custom Quotation Form today!

What material should I choose?

In short, consider your application's mechanical loads, corrosion resistance, and temperature requirements. For example, consider a high-strength alloy such as chrome silicone if your application sees high loads or deformations. At the same time, you may want a stainless steel spring if corrosion resistance is paramount. Additionally, advanced Nickel-based alloys may be appropriate for use in applications that experience very high temperatures. Titanium springs may also be an option if you need a spring with a high strength-to-weight ratio.

What typical tolerances can I expect on springs for aerospace and defense applications?

Spring tolerances depend heavily on the exact spring type and geometry. As such, we have performed extensive empirical studies, which we have used to develop tolerance equations for different manufacturing techniques. We have combined these with the best industry standards to create general tolerance ranges for springs commonly employed in the Aerospace and Defense industries. However, these calculations can be very involved, so we have integrated them into our design and manufacturing automation software.

However, if you contact our design team today, we will gladly walk you through these calculations to provide general tolerance values for your spring type and geometry!
