Custom Gas Springs & Oil Springs for Energy Applications

Century Spring is proud to supply custom high-quality springs for oil and gas production and exploration equipment that meet rigorous industry standards, from raw material procurement to final surface finishing. Our custom manufacturing services also include complete prototyping and tooling assistance.

Our customers in energy production industries rely on our precision springs and wire form products to perform reliably in safety-critical equipment, such as drilling equipment, valves, and pressure control systems.

We can provide all necessary documentation to support a complete Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) submission, including level classifications 1-5, a standardized procurement classification commonly used for safety-critical components where part traceability is required.  The classification shows that manufacturers consistently produce parts that conform to all design and quality specifications.

Durable Materials: The energy production industry relies on high-performance materials to drive innovations in developing critical energy resources and infrastructure. To support our partners in this industry, we offer high-quality spring material options that provide unmatched strength, corrosion protection, and fatigue resistance.

Our high-performance material options include stainless steel and copper. We also offer a wide selection of exotic, high temperature, high strength materials and super alloys such as Inconel®, Elgiloy®, and Hastelloy® materials. Our on-hand stock of exotic materials lets us quickly produce and deliver custom springs and wire form products.

Customization Options: We bring decades of design and manufacturing expertise to your custom oil and gas spring projects, providing thousands of custom spring options to fit the most complex, safety-critical mechanisms and equipment. Our team can work alongside you to create, refine, and optimize spring designs for specific tolerance and performance applications.

Precision Manufacturing: Our dedicated high-speed machines can quickly scale high-quality spring production processes to large part volumes typically required for energy production industries. Our cutting-edge computational equipment simulation and testing techniques, such as CNC compression self-monitoring and coiling machinery, enable us to manufacture parts to tight dimensional tolerances across many custom sizes and styles.

Gas Springs in Renewable Energy Systems

Springs typically used in oil and gas industries are also found in renewable energy systems, facilitating reliable energy production from such equipment.

For example, wind turbines feature high-strength springs that provide the angular pitch control of the windmill blades to maximize energy capture and compensate for wind speed variations. Similarly, solar panels rely on similar springs to provide precision motion control to adjust the title and orientation of the panels and maximize sunlight capture over the day.

FAQs About Energy, Oil & Gas Springs

What types of springs are commonly used in the energy industry?

Oil and gas and energy production industries utilize all of the three most common helical coil spring types:

  1. Compression Springs are used in down-hole drilling equipment to absorb shocks and vibrations encountered during drilling. They are also found in safety-critical values and pressure regulators.
  2. Torsion Springs can be found in sealing systems. They can also be found within gas turbines to absorb the rotational motion of such equipment.
  3. Extension Springs may be used as safety devices on door mechanisms or other control surfaces because they can be configured to require a significant tension force to displace a door or surface.

What spring materials are best suited for the oil and gas industries?

When selecting springs for your equipment, you should consider your application's mechanical loads, corrosion resistance, and temperature requirements. Generally, materials used in components and mechanisms in the energy production industry are high-strength materials with excellent corrosion and temperature resistance.

For example, high-strength alloys such as chrome silicone are common for applications that experience high loads and/or deformations. Stainless steel material is used in applications with low to medium loads that still require corrosion resistance.  Additionally, a Nickel-based alloy may be appropriate for use in applications that experience very high temperatures. Finally, if your spring must withstand high loads and temperatures and feature excellent corrosion resistance, consider a superalloy such as Elgiloy® or Hastelloy®.
