Double Torsion Springs: Custom Options for Precision Use
Double torsion springs, as the name denotes, are springs comprised of two helical torsion coils instead of one. The two helical coil torsion coils have opposite wind directions that are joined by a segment of straight wire, known as the hairpin. Such a configuration enables the double torsion spring to provide bidirectional force and displacement control, as well as twice the torque output when compared to a single torsion spring.
Double torsion springs of various sizes are integrated into machine components where rotational precision and dynamic motion control in two directions are required. In such applications, they provide unmatched angular torque control and performance in safety-critical components found in industrial, automotive, and aerospace environments.
Century Spring is proud to supply these industries with high-quality, custom double torsion spring solutions tailored to the exact design specifications and operating environments of each application. All our wire form products are manufactured from premium materials using cutting-edge manufacturing techniques and high-quality control standards, ensuring reliability in the most demanding applications.

Double Torsion Spring Information & Resources
Double Torsion Spring Applications
Double torsion springs are found in mechanisms and equipment across many industries. They are found in high-performance mechanisms that must accommodate rotation motion control in multiple directions, such as hinges, levels, and clamps. They are also found in compact mechanisms that require built-in safety redundancy.
Common applications of double torsion springs include automotive steering columns and window mechanisms, aircraft control systems, handheld surgical instrumentation, consumer electronics products, and power tools.
We are your trusted partner in developing double torsion springs for applications across the following markets.
How to Design or Specify a Double Torsion Spring
The most important design consideration when designing a double torsion spring is the spring rate, which is the torque required to displace the legs as measured in torque per degree.
After determining the working torque your double torsion spring must withstand, you can shop for standard torsion springs by the required spring rate to evaluate the other geometric properties needed to accommodate such torque control, such as the Wire Diameter and Outer Diameter (referred to as Body Diameter in torsion springs). The double torsion spring’s Hairpin Length defines the length of the bridge or curved portion of wire that connects the two bodies of the torsion spring (called the hairpin), as it extends outward perpendicularly from the center of the torsion spring axis. Conversely, the double torsion spring’s Hairpin Inner Diameter (ID) is the width of the hairpin as measured parallel to the main axis of the torsion spring coils.
Finally, other key geometric properties, such as Leg Length, Number of Coils, Angle between Legs, and Wind Direction, are also needed to accommodate the design envelope size and rotational load direction.
These parameters depend on the application's mounting requirements and desired rotation and torque control directions.
You should also consider the operational environment of your double torsion spring, including temperature, corrosion, and fatigue life requirements, to determine whether surface coatings or other secondary process operations are necessary.
FAQs About Double Torsion Springs
How does a double torsion spring differ from a standard torsion spring?
Standard torsion springs are single coils wound in one direction. In contrast, double torsion springs are two coils with opposite coil winds that are connected together via a segment of wire.
Can each coil in a double torsion spring be designed with different dimensions or leg angles?
Each coil within the double torsion spring can be configured with a different geometry as follows.
The Body Diameter (or Outer Diameter) of each of the double torsion spring coils can be wound into coils of different sizes with a differing number of coils (differing Body Length). They can also be bent into different end angles at the end of the double torsion spring.
However, it’s important to note that the wire diameter that is used to form the spring must be uniform for the entire double torsion spring.
How is torque calculated for a double torsion spring?
The total torque exerted is the sum of the individual resisting torques of each coil. The calculation for each torsion spring in the double torsion spring is denoted as:
Torque = Torsion Spring Rate (Torque per Degree) x Angular Displacement (degrees)
Where the angular displacement is measured at each of the legs of the coils, you can add together each of the resisting torque values on each of the double torsion spring coils to determine the total resisting double spring torque.
What are the typical Dimensional Tolerances for custom double torsion springs?
The exact expected tolerances for double torsion springs depend on the design and size of the double torsion spring. In general, tolerance values for torsion springs are a function of the body diameter-to-wire diameter ratio and are generally about ±10% for torque values and ±5% for diameter dimensions.
In which industries or applications are double torsion springs most commonly used?
Double torsion springs are used in mechanisms that require accommodating rotational motion and torque control in multiple directions. Such mechanisms include hinges, levels, and clamps, which must accommodate rotational motion in both directions. Common applications include automotive steering columns and window mechanisms, aircraft control systems, handheld surgical instrumentation, consumer electronics products, and power tools.
